DIN EN 13724 and its requirements
As is well known, there is a standard for everything in Germany. It is therefore no surprise that there is even a specific regulation for letterboxes. It is set out in DIN EN 13724. This European standard replaces the previously known German DIN 32617 standard. The main purpose of this standard is to recommend a size for both the letterbox itself and its letter slot. According to the DIN, the slot should be at least 230 millimetres wide. If you frequently receive large letters, a width of 325 millimetres is recommended. C4 envelopes will then also fit into the letterbox.
Incidentally, the standard applies throughout Europe. Furthermore, the house letterbox should be secure against theft in accordance with the letterbox standard. This is ensured by a so-called retrieval protection behind the insertion slot. Letterboxes conforming to the European letterbox standard are therefore designed so that you cannot simply reach into the letterbox with your hand. It is also recommended that the letterbox be lockable with a key. If it is a multi-part letterbox system, each household has its own key. With our attractively designed letterbox systems this is the case; spare keys can be reordered at any time.
What quality and material requirements are there?
In addition to size as an essential component of the standard, it also specifies the material of a good letterbox. The material used should be such that the letterbox cannot be deliberately deformed or damaged. We at the Briefkasten Manufaktur have therefore specialised in stainless steel letterboxes. They not only look elegant, they are also particularly durable and weather-resistant. Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, but should be treated with a maintenance spray from time to time. In addition to the material, impeccable quality also plays an important role. According to the DIN, the letterbox must be designed so that you cannot injure yourself when retrieving the mail. The letters themselves must also not be damaged. With our letterboxes from the most popular collections Brentano, Kant, Lessing, Goethe or Schiller you can rely on this quality standard.
We have summarised the most important requirements of DIN EN 13724 for you once again:
- recommended insertion sizes: 325 - 400 millimetres (crosswise insertion), 230 - 280 millimetres (lengthwise insertion), insertion height 30 - 35 millimetres
- resistance to corrosion according to DIN EN 1670 and to the ingress of water
- resistant to burglary thanks to high-quality materials and a lock
- installation height between 700 and 1700 millimetres
- retrieval protections to prevent unauthorised removal
All our letterboxes meet the aforementioned recommendations and should therefore be your first choice.
What should be considered when choosing the location?
Having chosen a high-quality letterbox according to the DIN mentioned above, you now need to find a suitable location. You are most flexible if you opt for a free-standing letterbox. It can be either concreted in or screwed down. We offer free-standing letterboxes for multi-family houses that you can place in the hallway or in front of the building. When mounting, ensure that the letter slot is at an optimal height. It should not be mounted higher than 170 centimetres above the floor. Some rules must particularly be observed for mailbox systems in multi-family houses. In practice, it has proved useful to label the letterboxes according to the arrangement of the flats. This ensures that the postman can deliver the post reliably and quickly. Of course, the nameplate must also be attached so that it is easily legible. The height of the lettering should be at least eight millimetres so that it can be easily recognised. In our online shop you can order high-quality engraved stainless-steel nameplates. Our unique nameplates are the most elegant solution for your letterbox.
