Not just any cable, but the right one

A good charging cable makes charging simple

In everyday life three things matter: the connector must match both vehicle and charging point, the cable must comfortably reach the parking space, and it should be easy to store after charging.

Our range is therefore deliberately concise. The Mode-3 charging cables from PHOENIX CONTACT have a Type 2 connector on the vehicle side. For wallboxes and public charging points with a Type 2 socket choose a ready-to-plug Type 2 / Type 2 cable. Variants with an open cable end are intended for permanent integration into a suitable wallbox or charging station and must be connected by a qualified electrician.

Check the charging point first

Which Type 2 charging cable do you need?

The most important decision is not the cable length but the connector on the charging-point side. Only then do you choose between straight and spiralised versions.

Plug-ready Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable for electric cars
Type 2 / Type 2: ready-to-plug charging This version connects an electric vehicle with a Type 2 connector to a wallbox or charging station that has a Type 2 socket. It is also suitable for many public AC charging points.

Charging cable with Type 2 vehicle plug and open cable end
Type 2 / open: for permanent integration The open cable end is connected within a suitable charging unit. This variant is not a portable plug-in cable and belongs in the planning and installation of a qualified electrician.

Spiralised Type 2 charging cable for compact storage
Spiralised: compact between charging sessions The cable contracts after use and lies with less floor coverage. It is important that the usable reach is sufficient even without a constant strong pull.

Variant Lengths in current range Suitable for Check before selecting
Type 2 / Type 2, straight 5, 7 or 10 m Wallboxes and charging stations with a Type 2 socket Vehicle connector, parking position and required reserve
Type 2 / Type 2, spiralised 4 m Short distances and compact cable storage Reachable length without a strong constant pull
Type 2 / open, straight 15 m Permanently attached cable at a suitable charging unit Installation, cable management and approval through specialist planning
Type 2 / open, spiralised 4 m Permanent integration for short connection routes Mounting position, strain relief and usable reach
Reach rather than unnecessary cable slack

Choosing the right length starts with the parking position

Do not just measure the direct distance between charging point and vehicle. Also consider different parking orientations, the position of the charging socket and a practical cable route.

5 m

A compact choice when vehicle and charging point are close together and the charging socket is always easily accessible. Less excess cable makes storage easier.

7 m

More leeway for changing parking positions, carports and public charging points. This length is a good compromise between freedom of movement and ease of handling.

10 m

Useful for a more distant charging point or when the vehicle is not always parked in the same position. The additional reach requires more space for tidy storage.

15 m with open end

This length is intended for permanent integration into a suitable charging unit. Cable length, signal transmission and cable management must be part of specialist planning.

32 A does not automatically mean 22 kW

The actual charging power is determined by the overall system

The cables offered are designed for three‑phase AC charging up to 32 A. In the usual 400‑volt three‑phase system this corresponds to a charging power of up to 22 kW. How fast your vehicle actually charges, however, depends on the vehicle's AC charging capability, the charging point, the electrical installation and the authorisation of the charging system.

A 32‑A charging cable can also be used at a charging point with lower capacity, provided the connectors and manufacturer specifications match. However, it does not increase charging power by itself. The limiting factor is always the weakest component in the charging chain.

Not an adapter for household sockets: A Mode‑3 charging cable connects a suitable electric vehicle to a designated wallbox or charging station. It neither replaces a mobile charging unit for household sockets nor the necessary charging and protection equipment.
So that cables and contacts remain reliable for a long time

Use and store charging cables correctly

Hold the plug

Do not pull the charging cable out of the vehicle or charging point by the cable. Unlock the charging process and disconnect at the plug housing.

Keep contacts clean

Protective caps help to protect plugs from dirt and moisture. Dirty or damaged contacts must not be used.

Do not run over

Lay the cable so that vehicles, gates and sharp edges cannot crush it. Tight kinks and unnecessary tensile stress shorten its lifespan.

Check regularly

Inspect the cable, plug and protective cap for visible damage before use. If there are any abnormalities, do not continue to use the cable.

Short and to the point

Frequently asked questions about Type 2 charging cables

Does a Type‑2/Type‑2 charging cable fit every electric vehicle?

No. The vehicle needs a Type 2 connector for AC charging and the charging point a Type 2 socket. For vehicles, import models or older connectors you should check the vehicle manufacturer's specifications.

Does a 32‑A cable always charge at 22 kW?

No. The cable is rated for this current but does not determine charging power on its own. Vehicle, wallbox or charging station, grid connection and charging authorisation together limit the actual usable power.

What cable length is practical for everyday use?

The cable should reach the charging socket in all usual parking positions without tension. A small reserve is helpful; unnecessarily long cables, however, make handling and storage more difficult.

What is the difference between a straight and a spiralised charging cable?

A straight cable provides its full length without tension and is suitable for greater distances. A spiral cable remains more compact but requires sufficient reserve when pulled out and should not be under constant strong tension.

What is a charging cable with an open cable end intended for?

It is permanently integrated into a suitable charging unit. The open end is not intended for plugging in. Connection, strain relief, protective measures and testing are carried out by a qualified electrician.

Do I always need a separate charging cable for a wallbox?

Only for a wallbox with a Type 2 socket. Wallboxes with a permanently attached Type 2 cable already provide the vehicle cable. Therefore check the equipment of the charging point first.

Can a Type‑2 charging cable be used with a household socket?

No. A suitable mobile charging unit with control and protection functions would be required. A pure Mode‑3 cable is intended for connection to a designated wallbox or charging station.

The appropriate charging point for the cable

Not decided on a wallbox or charging station yet?

A wallbox is the compact solution for a garage, carport or façade. A charging station places the charging point freestanding directly at the parking space. In both designs, whether the unit has a socket or a fixed cable determines whether a separate Type 2/Type 2 cable is required.

Choose connector, length and use appropriately

Compare charging cables or clarify your charging project together

Choose the appropriate Type 2 cable according to the charging point, cable length and desired handling. For a new wallbox, charging station or a variant with an open cable end we will assist you in matching it to the overall system.
